Tips to Visit the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

So you’re thinking about doing the Inca Trail? That’s amazing It’s not just about reaching Machu Picchu but about the whole journey there The trail itself is full of history and some of the most beautiful scenery you’ll ever see But before you lace up your hiking boots here’s a few tips to help you get ready for the adventure

Book in advance The Inca Trail has a limited number of permits and they sell out fast sometimes months ahead So don’t wait around As soon as you know you want to do it lock in those permits You can’t just show up and hope for a spot it doesn’t work like that

Next up get in shape The Inca Trail isn’t exactly a walk in the park It’s four days of hiking at a pretty high altitude and there’s some serious climbs If you’re not used to hiking or exercise it’s a good idea to start training a bit before you go Even just doing some walks or light hikes in your area can help Your legs will thank you later

About the altitude you’re gonna be up pretty high and that can affect you Spend a few days in Cusco before starting the hike This gives your body time to adjust to the altitude Drink plenty of water and don’t push yourself too hard at first

You’re gonna need the right gear A good pair of hiking shoes or boots is a must and make sure they’re broken in before the hike The last thing you want is to deal with blisters halfway through Also pack light but smart Bring layers because it can be warm during the day but really cold at night A good rain jacket is also essential trust me you don’t want to get soaked

One thing a lot of people don’t think about is snacks The tour companies usually provide meals but it’s nice to have some energy bars or trail mix for when you need a quick boost You’re going to be burning a lot of calories on the hike

And don’t forget your camera There’s so many spots along the trail where you’ll want to snap a picture But like I said with Machu Picchu don’t spend all your time behind the camera Take a few minutes at each spot to just enjoy the view You’ll pass through ancient ruins cloud forests and incredible mountain views It’s all part of the experience

At the end of the trail when you finally reach the Sun Gate and see Machu Picchu below you it’s gonna feel unreal All the hard work will be worth it and that moment is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life

So take it slow enjoy every step and have the adventure of a lifetime
