Hiking Tips to Rainbow Mountain Trek

Reaching the most visited natural attraction in Peru is a challenge that every traveler must undertake, since this beautiful mountain is located at more than 5,000 meters above sea level. That is why in this article we will offer you some tips and recommendations before embarking on a tour to the Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca).

About altitude sickness:

Ascending the Rainbow Mountain is a real challenge due to the high altitude at which it is located, reaching its highest point (Vinicunca viewpoint) a height of 5100 meters above sea level. Therefore, you must be prepared to overcome altitude sickness and make sure that it does not hinder your trip to Rainbow Mountain. You have to drink a lot of fluids, especially coca tea, and try not to exert yourself too much when walking.

Acclimatization for the walk:

Acclimatization is a crucial factor in reaching Rainbow Mountain. It is a gradual process, and time is the best remedy to combat altitude sickness. It is recommended to spend at least one day in Cusco before the trek. Take light walks around the city or enjoy a city tour on the outskirts of Cusco to acclimatize to the altitude and minimize the effects of altitude sickness. This will also help prevent possible symptoms.

early break:

To visit Rainbow Mountain, I recommend getting plenty of rest and going to bed early. You have to get up very early as the buses start picking up passengers at 4 in the morning. Also, the walk covers a distance of 5 kilometers and requires all the energy you can muster.

Pack your backpack:

It is advisable to prepare the backpack the night before and include the following items: waterproof pants, sunscreen, scarf, sunglasses, water, snacks, etc.

Dress appropriately:

Due to the high altitude of the Rainbow Mountain, it is recommended to bring trekking clothes for the walk, but above all to bring warm clothes. Consider bringing trekking shoes, waterproof jackets and pants, rain ponchos, a light backpack, and hiking poles.

Purchase of supplies:

Although the supplies can be purchased in the city of Cusco, it is recommended to purchase them on the route to Vinicunca to support local vendors. By purchasing from them, you will be helping their families through this work. Take the following snacks with you: chocolate, nuts, coca leaf sweets, lemon sweets and water.

Best time to visit:

The best time to start the Rainbow Mountain trek is during the dry season, between March and November. It is not recommended to come between December and February, since it is the rainy season. However, due to the effects of climate change, the weather in Cusco can be very unpredictable.

Total distance of the walk:

Please note that the road to Rainbow Mountain is steep and challenging, covering a total distance of 5 kilometers. If at any time you feel tired, you can hire the service of a horse at the beginning of the walk.

Self-guided trip to Vinicunca:

Undertaking a self-guided trip to the Rainbow Mountain in these times of pandemic is risky, since several protocols established by the government and the Ministry of Health must be followed. Therefore, we suggest using the services of an authorized agency.
